Alaska travel tips for active families Fishing, Wildlife & Outdoor adventure.....Alaska's got it all and if that's what your family loves, then Great Alaska's Family Adventure is for your family!
Active families have been coming to Great Alaska Adventure Lodge for nearly 30 years...but is right for your family? Well, the answer to that question is up to you, but if you and your family love the natural world and wildlife as much as my daughter, then the answer is yes. Young people are more likely to love Alaska than you might think! In addition, the ability to "unplug" in today's world can be an invaluable thing, and there is nothing like a 20 foot salmon fishing dory, with your guide pulling on the oars to give your family some "quality time" together!
But of course Alaska is a giant destination, and there are so many Alaska's, that no one place is best for everyone. From the remote and sometimes desolate far North, to the panhandle of Southeast Alaska, from the Aleutian Islands to Kodiak to the Kenai Peninsula and on to Denali...every ecosystem is unique. This is one of the things that drew us many years ago to the South central area...our home lodge on the Kenai sits in the very epicenter of diversity...within a two hour drive lies two separate coastlines, 2 rugged mountain ranges a Boreal forest, coastal Lowlands, old growth coastal forests and a mile-deep glaciated sheet that is second larges in North America...all within a two hours drive of the lodge.
For over thirty years of offering these trips, we have discovered that families come in every shape and size....from Moms with their daughters, to Fathers and Sons to Family Reunions with over twenty family members...it feels like we've seen them all! That is what is great about Alaska. Whether you are a dad whose son has been away at college, or two brothers who live on opposite coasts..the time spent together in the wilderness becomes some of the most remembered times of all. We absolutely love helping people reconnect without having to worry about a single thing but having a good time. That is What Great Alaska Adventure Lodge is all about!
Now all this being said, just as no one single area is right for everyone, no one operator is right for everyone, either. Our trips focus on variety, fun and value, with 30% off kids 15 and under (one full paying adult per discounted child required) on our special "Family Adventures". We offer 15% off for 15 and under on all of our other standard trips as well.
"Hi Kent, We arrived home on the weekend after a brilliant holiday. Sorry we didn’t get to meet you personally. We had a wonderful stay in Alaska and compliments to your amazing staff. I have attached the awesome King Salmon that I pulled in with the help of my 13 year old daughter Clementine (it was actually on her line! A little too big for her to tackle alone). We were extremely spoilt with perfect weather and Bear Camp was AMAZING!
I hope that you have had a wonderful salmon run with good size fish being caught.
Big hello to your fantastic staff."

Our trips are physical in nature- nothing that a physically active family cannot handle, of course but they are not "sightseeing", or bus trips. While we do offer some excellent, moderate sight seeing and Nature based trips (and many of our fishing itineraries are not physically demanding) these family adventures are designed to be fun! We also tweak the itineraries to suit your families activity level..for example on a day of hiking, one group may travel our shortest hike (1/4 mile on level ground to a lakeside platform) or a medium length hike (about 3 miles on level ground, ending at a salmon viewing platform over a rushing waterfall) or even our most active hike (to a glacial ice sheet overlooking a beautiful Fjord) 10 miles round trip with a good bit of elevation! We also offer activities like mountain biking, 2 scenic floats and one whitewater rafting trip, Sea Kayaking, canoeing, fly in Bear Viewing,
