Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1

Day 1

Your Family Adventure will begin with a pick up at your hotel (3 designated pickup spots) in Anchorage at 7:45am for the scenic and comfortable trip to Great Alaska Adventure Lodge. After a thorough orientation, you’ll enjoy lunch and then shuttle to the Soldotna airport for the bush plane flight to bearcamp.  Your guide will teach you the ways of the bears and safe travel in bear country.  1 1/2 hours on the ground before heading back to civilization.  Back at the lodge, settle into your riverfront cabins before happy hour and dinner at the main lodge.  Fishing, paddling and relaxing are available each night.
Family Beach Fishing

Day 2

After a hearty breakfast, it's time to hit the river.  Your guide will teach you the fundementals of fly casting or spin casting, targeting salmon and fighting them to the beach (hopefully!)  All four species of salmon pass our banks during the summer- which species will be availble during your trip will depend on the time of year and many other factors.   The kids will learn spin or fly casting (your choice), how to handle fish for release (or the freezer!) and have a great time.  After the fishing's over, there's s plenty of time to relax before the family friendly happy hour and dinner.

Day 4

Day 3

Wake up to cruise the incomparable Kenai Fjords National Park! On the way to Seward we'll stretch our legs by walking to the face of a retreating Glacier close enough to almost touch.  Then it's on to Seward to  spend the rest of this day cruising and seeking calving Glaciers, Humpback whales and Orca, charming Sea Otters and endangered Stellar Sea Lions. Return to the lodge in time for happy hour, dinner and evening activities for the energetic kids and relaxation on the deck for the adults.

Day 4

Today is an active and fun day!  The Chugach Mountains and the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge are the perfect hiking destination, with with lots of options. Our favorite is a gentle hike to a raised viewing platform over a rushing Alaska river, where whe'll hope to see Sockeye salmon leapring towards their natal spawning grounds.  For those who still have energy, we may continue on to a spectacular sub-alpine lake for lunch.  After photos, we'll head back to the lodge for dinner.
Homer Tour

Day 5

Today, we'll tour mighty Homer, Alaska and see Russian orthodox churches, active volcanoes, mountain vistas and probably a few Kenai Peninsula Moose with their spring young.  Your first view of Homer and Kachemak Bay is truly unforgettable and we will spend a fun filled day exploring the art and rustic uniqueness of a bush community at “Land’s End”.  In Homer, we'll walk "the Spit", stroll the bayside Boardwalk and visit the world famous Salty Dog Saloon.  For Natural history buffs, a stop at the amazing "Islands and Oceans" exhibit is a must.  Back to the lodge in time for family friendly happy hour, dinner and overnight at the riverfront lodge.
Day 2

Day 6

Today we'll float through the turquoise clear waters of the upper Kenai River and it's prodigious salmon spawning grounds to see one of nature's most amazing events.  This annual returning of 8 separate runs of 4 different species of Salmon event brings Bear and Eagle (plus wild Trout!) in numbers to feast on salmon eggs and the carcasses of hundreds of thousands of dying salmon.  The tumbling aquarine water rushes along rocks and forest through the younger and "swiss-alp" inspired Kenai Mountains.  Along with the migration of the huge Caribou herds, this may be is Alaska’s most impressive outdoor event.  Gourmet lunch served shoreside by your guide with Raindeer sausage and a robust merlot for the grown ups.
Kid's paddling in Alaska

Day 7

This morning we'll paddle into the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge- leaving civilization behind as we head towards our tent camp on the Moose river.  Nesting Swans, giant Moose, Beaver, Lynx and more call this region home.  Return to the lodge via comfortable and quick river boats with shallow draft moters.  Guided fishing is also available if you choose- drift or troll for salmon with one of our expert guides (this means an early wakeup!) returning to the lodge in time for depart to Kenai and your flight back to Anchroage.  (Return to Anchorage flight not included).
