What a Team! From Toby Sprinkle at the top of the Team to the Lodge Culinary Staff...
Evening Activities at Great Alaska
Your daily, fully guided activities each day are just the beginning. Located in the heart of the Kenai Peninsula, Great Alaska Fish Camp’s legendary lodge sits at the confluence of the Kenai and Moose Rivers. In addition to allowing us to easily access the entire Kenai, (along with six other wadefishing streams and offshore Halibut, Cod, Chinook and Coho in three saltwater locations) it also provides us with a great place to relax in the evening, or extend the days adventures if you choose. Whether your emphasis is trophy sport fishing or wildife viewing, there is something for everyone with the all inclusive evening activities at Great Alaska Adventure Lodge.
Happy Hour
Each evening, as the boats return from the rIvers and saltwater and the guests return from their various mix of activities (sport fishing, scenic or whitewater rafting, wild bear viewing hiking, canoeing, glacier and wildlife cruising are but a few of the options), the staff in the kitchen is busy readying a wonderful dinner. Our "nearly world famous" family-friendly happy hour kicks off the festivities as 7:00 guides, managers and guests all gather to discuss the exciting events of the day. This is more than just pre dinner drinks.....thi
s is your chance to meet with your guide for the day and share pictures, or meet your guide for tomorrow and discuss the style of fishing you prefer..or even get fitted for waders if you are wade fishing for trout or steelhead on your experience tomorrow. Wildlife and sightseeing guests will learn about the next days destination (perhaps "the End of the Road" or even a departure for Denali National Park) as well as photo tips, how to pack, etc. In the nearly thirty years of providing these trips, this even has carved out a special place of importance with our first time and returning guests.
Photo sharing
Our lodge flatscreen is just the place to see how those pictures really came out- so memory cards will recall that huge Chinook salmon or Trophy Trout; that incredible calving glacier on the Kenai Fjords cruise or the Bull moose you saw on your float through the incredible Kenai Canyon. While the kitchen staff serves hearty Alaskan Hors' Duerves like halibut chunks wrapped in Bacon, or smoked Alaskan Salmon dip and rustic crackers to whet your appetite for the coming meal.
Dinner is generally served plated tableside but also occasionally buffet style, depending
upon the meal. The menu focuses on fresh fish (salmon and Halibut) with tasty sauces. The "all American" turkey and stuffing dinner is also one of the favorites year after year. Vegetarian and other specialty diets are also accommodated happily. Many meals offer variety of fruits and vegetables so that you may tweak your own personal diet youself. Of course, this being a vacation, desert is also served after dinner!
For those who enjoy the fruit of the vinyards, a variety of fine wines are served with dinner. Call or write for our current list of available bottles.
Evening Activities, cont.
World class Alaskan Spin and Flyfishing
Once dinner and happy hour is over, even activites rule the day.
Many guests choose to relaxe on the huge deck overlooking the confluence of the Kenai and Moose rivers,
while fly fishermen may choose to tie a few flies on our fly tying bench in the lounge. Of course, most fly and spin anglers instead work their way down to the beach where we are fortunate to have the finest shore fishing on the legendary kenai literally steps from your cabin. Each night a fishing assistant will have the fire going and the equipment ready for you- King, Silver, Sockeye and Pink salmon are all migrating right past the lodge and we catch fish every single evening from mid May till the end of the season. The fishing is so good that in oru early years many folks asked if they could simply come stay with us just to fish the beach..in fact we still get those requests today..sorry- it's for lodge guests only!
Calm water paddling and wildlife viewing
In addition to the incredible fishing, we are blesse to be at the confluence of the Moose and Kenai rivers...and while the Kenai is a fast flowing, rocky and glaciel stream, the Moose River is a slow, meandering gem of a stream that seldom reaches 6 foot in depth or less than 60 degrees in temperature during the summer. This, along with the abundant grasses that grow along it's banks and bottom, create fantastic habitat for giant Moose, Tundra Swans (which nest during April and May) wood ducks, beaver, Lynx and more. We keep safe and stable canoes and flatwater Kayaks on the beach for your use, so photographers and nature lovers may paddle up the river to view the display. Hearty paddlers may make it 3 miles upstream to our permanent tent camp to stretch their legs and view the river from the high bank at the camp.
Special Activities:
On certain evenings we also do a "Moonlight Moose" trip...the big moose come out in the evenings and sometims we'll see half dozen or more in a single trip down own of our favorite alaskan dirt roads. Other days the grownups may have a poker game in the lounge or perhaps a slide show of our Mexico or Costa Rica lodges....check the "big board" for the activities going on during your stay!
