Mexico Travel Stories

Magic on Isla Holbox

by Kristin Hannah

After much deliberation, our family chose magical Isla Holbox for our reunion. We were coming together from many corners of the country--Washington state, Arizona, Saskatchewan, and Alaska, all of us boarding a plane for a foreign country for our first get together in years. I had never really spent any time in Mexico, and to be honest, I'm not much of a fisherwoman, so I wasn't sure how it was going to all work out. But, in a word, it was perfect. Honestly, what a location. White sand that stretches as far as the eye can see; water that is Windex blue and so warm you never want to get out; palm tree swaying in the breezes; gorgeous birds that make you imagine that suddenly you're a world class photographer. The list goes on and on. The beach offers a quiet place to walk and talk and reconnect with the people who matter in your life. We kayaked in secret waters and drove to Chichen Itza (or however you spell that) and toasted our good luck with some of the best margaritas in the world, made by Luciano at the lodge. And how could I forget the in room massages? Anyway, I could drone on indefinitely, but mostly what I want to say is that the lodge gave us more than great accomodations and fabulous service--it provided the perfect setting for relaxation and reconnection. How can life get better than that?
