I went down to Holbox Fly fishing Lodge last winter with my family...My dad said...
All Holbox Flyfishing TripsOn the Northern tip of the Yucatan Peninsula, just a few minutes from the mainland, sits a crescent shaped island of sugar white sand. Isla Holbox has a rightful place as one of the true "bucket list" destinations for Mexico Tarpon Fishing, and and sun seekers alike.
It’s incredible location at the tip of the Yucatan, combined with a truly unique series of mangrove style lagoons has created a fishery of amazing consistency. Summertime trips can combine the huge offshore trophy tarpon with the smaller “nursery” style fishing of the back channels. In addition, the incredible Nurse sharks enter the area in large numbers during the summer, and huge groups of Pink Flamingos inhabit the island at the same time to provide a world renowned wildlife viewing experience.
Summer fishing focuses on the Giant Tarpon, so 12 weight rods are the norm...however most guests will also spend some time targeting the smaller species either for a break (those 70 pound Tarpon will wear you out!!!!) or because the weather if too windy for offshore, or mostly because it’s so fun! Plan on lots of casting to visually surfacing fish, with your guide poling you from likely spot to likely spot and then helping you spot the fish.
In addition to our incredible Holbox Flyfishing, the quaint and one-of-a-kind village is one you will not soon forget. Transportation is via golf carts and sandals and the variety of restaurants, shops and entertainment make your time off the water unforgettable.
Logistics are a snap- fly into Cancun from anywhere, and overnight at one of the many hotels. You’ll be met at the hotel the next morning by your shuttle driver, who will take you 2 1/2 hours hours north to Chiquila for a 45 minute ferry trip to the Island, where you will be met and shuttled by golf cart to Isla Holbox Flyfishing Lodge. Its a safe and totally reliable transfer and will have you ready to cast to rolling tarpon the next morning!
Our beach front lodge is the perfect place from which to explore this incredible place! High season runs April – September, with December-March comprising the low season. Come see Isla Holbox…you’ll be glad you did…
