Flyfisherman who come to Great Alaska are in for a special treat. During the day we hit all the hot flyfishing spots on the Peninsula, but if that's not enough you'll have 24 hour access to the best fishing hole on the Kenai for kings, silvers, sockeye and pinks. Here are some of our gear suggestions for the various species: |

Kings: 10-12 Weights -- these are the big guns...unless you spend a fair amount of time casting big flies and are prepared to spend some money, these rods don't make a lot of sense...but they are great fun. The season for kings on a fly is May 20th through July 31st, depending on water levels. Plan on a high quality reel with 30 pound backing (approx 200 yards). Best overall line would be a 250 - 350 grain "sink tip" line. Short leaders (3 ½ to 5 feet) tapering to 12 pound with shock tippet. Recommended flies (1, 1/0 and 2/0 sizes) Comets, Green-butt skunk, Crazy Charlies, Electric Leeches, Skykomish Sunrise, Matukas, Babine Special and Thors. Any large steelhead/salmon fly will work. |
Silvers/Sockeye/Small Kings/Large Trout/Large Char: 7/8 weight rod capable of throwing a medium heavy sink-tip or fast sinking sink tip. A full floating line will be the main line to have spooled up, as we would use it for steelhead, large trout and Sockeye Salmon as well. Keep the sink tip on a spare spool or second reel. Recommended flies: Silvers: Purple Bunny Leeches, Purple Wooly Buggers, Thors, Egg Patterns, Xmas trees and bright tinsel patterns, Green Lanterns and purple Pollywogs (floating flies for bear camp). Sockeye: Coho Streamer patterns, large nymph patterns, simple silver-bodied streamers with lots of hair. Small Kings: Same as standard King List |

Huge Rainbow |
Large Trout/Steelhead (Lite) Same as silvers, but in the 6/7-weight category. A little on the light side, but Nicer to cast and a joy to hook the large rainbows on. Recommended flies: Steelhead: purple, pink and black wooly buggers, bunny leeches, chartreuse and pink comets/shrimp patterns, egg patterns, Green lanterns, boxcar, purple peril, freight train. |
Trout/Char/Pink salmon: 5 or 6-weight rod with 1 floating and 1 sinking tip line. Assortment of tippet and leader material. Plan on the floating line being the line of choice. Rod should be beefy for a little guy, able to sling split shot and punch a fly into a breeze. Recommended flies: Trout/Char: Wet: Wool-head Sculpins, Bunny Leeches, Flesh Flies, Muddler Minnow, Wooly Buggers, lots of Egg Patterns Steelhead: purple, pink and black wooly buggers, bunny leeches, chartreuse and pink comets/shrimp patterns, egg patterns, Green lanterns, boxcar, purple peril, freight train.
